Just Checking

Just Checking logo

On-line monitoring system to support people with dementia. It is simple to install, and does not require broadband or telephone line as it connects to the internet wirelessly.

Just Checking is a system of movement sensors, which provides a chart of activity of a person living alone. The chart is accessed via the internet.

Care professionals throughout the UK use the system for assessment and planning care.

Just Checking provides family carers with reassurance that someone is following their usual pattern of life, without undermining their independence. It helps relatives to plan social visits and to manage their care to best effect.

The Department of Health’s Care Services Efficiency Development (CSED) team visited four local authorities towards the end of 2008 and carried out an evaluation of what they were doing. The case studies are the CSED website here. They concluded that in Staffordshire, where Just Checking is used for assessment:

  • care packages were more efficient and cost effective
  • residential care was postponed, individuals exercised control over their own lives and remained in their own home for longer, risks managed with other telecare
  • total annual savings for a cohort of 21 people = £120,000
  • carers were supported and involved via the Just Checking system

Notional savings of £55,000 were made following the use of Just Checking in assessments in the Cheshire case study, where telecare is being used to support adults with learning disabilities.
