Prediction: big data saving big money

...means, versus terminology slung like hash, endless conferences, the word ‘Hadoop’ and that worried look on your HIT department head’s face, John Loonsk, MD helps to define it in language even this Editor can understand. Start with “Specifically, big data tools facilitate pulling together great amounts of available data to support an objective whether those data were recorded specifically and narrowly for that objective or not.” Whew. Are the benefits of telehealth a myth? (BBC item, UK)

BBC News (business section) has just published a classically balanced look at telehealth in the UK, with a passing mention of the O2 Help at Hand launch. It’s a pity the article does not have a commenting system as the conclusion may be debatable. Are the benefits of telehealth a myth? Heads-up thanks to John Guyatt via LinkedIn. On a positive telehealth note, the Public Service website has published a brief item based on recent experience in Leicester, although the title sounds rather backwards! Cold weather keeps telehealth patients out of hospital.... Continue Reading

Telehealth’s first 90 day refund

...Neil Versel at HIMSS13 gets all the above right and then some: John Holland of AMC Health explains how IVR is highly time-saving in case management. For GHS, their model indicated that it took an average of 2.9 attempts to get a patient on the phone, three-fifths of calls were unnecessary because they found no gaps in care, and as few as 15 percent of calls required a medical intervention. Also they are developing a ‘smart inhaler’ for asthma and COPD patients which can indicate a missed dosage or, importantly, alert to over-use as an indicator of diminished lung function.... O2’s mobile care – in a shop near you (UK)

...their lack of sowing. There is a lot of preliminary work needed to make this a commercially viable market ... but it has always been there for the taking! John Mooney I agree this is good news, anything that that raises the mCare market across the UK is welcome. However I would like to point out that Jontek in partnership with Age UK and Safelinq (now Oysta Technologies) helped develop and integrate this product into the Jontek Telecare monitoring centres 3 years ago and it has been used since then by a number of our customers for monitoring clients with... EHR backlash brewing. But one day, you’ll mine the data

...the EHR business model–not with hundreds of practice EHRs fighting for miniscule share. Also HealthcareITNews. Related articles: Confusion, consolidation and collapse, More EHR misery: EHR payment cutoff, data breach, Revealed: Hospital EHRs lobbied for stimulus funding But no worries, at one point the mining of data–the analysis of ‘big data’ generated on patients–will come from those same EHRs. Privacy concerns of course but this data can be invaluable for research: quick clinical feedback, comparative effectiveness, clinical trials, epidemiology, social acceptance of medication and similar. Overview of the Misfit Shine

The Shine activity tracker by Misfit Wearables has garned huge interest and support (Indiegogo oversubscribed in excess of $650,000) since its debut last year. The interesting part of this article is a more exact description of its Wi-Fi interface which requires direct contact with an iPhone or Android running the app to download data and presumably upload adjustments. It’s also made from aircraft aluminum, is small (about a small cookie, two quarters or two 50p coins) and provides blinking orange light feedback. It will be interesting if Sonny Vu and John Sculley grab onto the potential in the older adult... Continue Reading

Your holiday weekend ‘short cuts’

In Editor Donna’s ‘in box’: Much hype around Misfit Wearables, which incorporates in its bracelet and pocket clip (necklace to come) a metallic activity/aerobics tracker called the Shine, which is the size of a quarter, uploads on both iPhone 4/5 and most Android devices via Wi-Fi, and will retail in the $79-199 range when released sometime in mid-2013. It’s raised more than $500,000 on crowdfunding site Indiegogo.com, plus developer Sonny Vu is backed by partner John Sculley (remember him a century ago at Apple?), Founders Fund and the ubiquitous Khosla Ventures. AMC telemonitoring technologies get FDA approval for MS drug trial (US)

“FDA approval of this innovative study design is a significant milestone. Pharmaceutical companies have been worried that the FDA would not accept telemonitoring in place of costly clinic visits,” said John Holland, senior vice president for research and business development at AMC Health. U.S. Food and Drug Administration Approves Remote Monitoring for Drug Trial. ThirdAge.com (3 pages)... Continue Reading

Tell Ecumen what you think of pendant alarms/medical alarms/PERS

Ecumen is conducting an online survey of people over 55 on behalf of a “group of PERS device companies [who] are looking for your input to design the next generation of this product”. Good grief! To mis-quote one of the UK’s ex-prime ministers, Sir John Major, ‘If the answer is more pendants, we are asking the wrong question!” A Personal Emergency Response System Designed by You (No closing date on the survey, but it is still open for you to tell them what you think.) Tunstall UK’s managing director elected to TSA Board (UK)

...join the TSA knowing the way that it operates? Is there another organisation out there that might offer a better home to such an organisation? john shanahan I'd say Simon's time on the board will be pivotal. Steve Hards, Editor I'm now hearing that not all TSA members were aware that there was a Board vacancy or even that the vote had taken place. I wonder what comprises a valid election under the TSA constitution and whether there might be a challenge? Anon It seems like a number of other suppliers were not aware of the vacancy or election, I... Continue Reading
