Breaking News: HIMSS20 canceled; Naidex update; what is the outlook for other major conferences? (updated)

...and HIMSS’ own advisory, HIMSS is accepting cancellations from the CDC’s Level 3 or 4 alert countries, but other cancellations are not being refunded (likely pushed to 2021). Hotels/airlines may not be refundable based upon policies and the clout of travel bookers. Onsite, HIMSS is preparing onsite medical offices for care and screening, as well as promoting the HIMSS elbow bump in lieu of the handshake. It’s regrettable as there are hundreds of staff involved year to year who are responsible for all the planning, marketing, logistics, and security for HIMSS and any conference of this size. The major reason?... Continue Reading

VA running at least one month late on Cerner implementation launch

...worse ‘slog’ than anyone imagined, so it made little sense to train anyone on a unfinished system. The date is now estimated to be end of April. Apparently key Congresscritters on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and IT subcommittees were prepared for the delay by Secretary Wilkie–a wise move–and they applauded the recognition that more preparation and training are required. VA’s fiscal 2021 budget, revealed on 10 Feb, requested $2.6 billion for the Cerner EHR modernization project, up from $1.5 billion in the prior year. There’s $500 million more for infrastructure readiness and $62 million hike in program management support.... Continue Reading

First they came for the fax machines….now NHS is coming for the pagers

Bloop, Bleep. The NHS has officially announced the phasing out of pagers in hospitals by the end of 2021, with all hospitals required to have their plans and infrastructure in place by September 2020. Replacing pagers will be mobile phones, and smartphones with health communication apps, which facilitate two-way communications and coverage. According to Digital Health, the pager-less pilot was at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT), which is one of the Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) sites. The 2017 test resulted in junior doctors saving 48 minutes per shift and nurses 21 minutes on average. The platform used was Medic... Continue Reading

Will there ever be a medical ‘tricorder’?

...for Veterinarians but in the human health market their first uses will be driven by financial market forces and these will ultimately undermine Patient trust as they will be used ON us rather than FOR us. You can see examples of this might materialise by looking at how security CCTV is being used in Chinese Classrooms: http://uk.businessinsider.com/china-school-facial-recognition-technology-2018-5 Imagine the mess we can get in if you give marketeers of unhealthy things access to billboards that have integrated camera/sensors that can read/predict your IQ/sexual-history/blood-glucose/etc and pull data from your Facebook/Instagram to communicate with us in highly targeted and simply irresistible ways?... OnePerspective: Analogue telecare is a dead horse: stop flogging it

...that a more robust digital solution was needed. But with no clear options available in the UK, Communicare247 rose to their challenge by engaging with the local authority in the co-design of an award-winning, fully-digital cloud-based alarm receiving centre system. Using existing TEC partners available from procurement body, Scotland Excel, the local authority now has almost 1,000 digitally-enabled TEC users. It is well on track for all of its 4,500 telecare users to be served by a fully digital TEC system by 2021, in what will be a UK first and aligned with the Scottish Government’s digital agenda. The UK’s... Continue Reading

Pharma company ‘breaks the Internet’ with Kim K, gets FDA testy

But it may break them…well, give them a fracture. Or a good hard marketing lesson. Specialty pharma Duchesnay thought it had hit the jackpot with negotiating a promotional spokeswoman endorsement from pregnant celebrity Kim Kardashian of its morning sickness drug Diclegis. The Kardashian Marketing Machine cranked up. Kim (and mom Kris Jenner) took to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter in late July with (scripted) singing of Diclegis’ praises to their tens of millions of followers. The Instagram posts linked to an ‘important safety page’ a/k/a The Disclaimers. That wasn’t near enough for the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) which governs the acceptable... Continue Reading

Figure 1: an Instagram for medical professionals

Secure, free medical image sharing, access and collaboration is the idea behind Canadian startup Figure 1. It provides a platform for medical professionals, who are largely ‘verified’ with a blue tick (check)–a process the company is doing across 40 countries–to upload pictures into feeds, make comments and bookmark. While anyone can join, images are also put through a fairly strict vetting and access process to preserve patient privacy. They have to be deidentified, patient consent provided via signature (country-specific consent forms held by the doctor), and edited using their special software so that faces aren’t showing and identifying metadata deleted....
