Six Steps to Telecare Press Release Happiness

...Avoid alienating your readers When it is humans who read press releases why does it seem that so many are written to be read by robots? (And I’m not talking web bots, here!) In the first part of this series I touched on your potential audiences, although before writing you would do well to sit down with colleagues and roughly flesh out the answers to… Read more… Part 3: Specific advice for frontline telecare/telehealth services The first two parts of this series have dealt with identifying the audiences for your press release and how to avoid turning them off. Telecare Aware’s Terminology Campaign

...internationally recognised taxonomy and set of definitions needs to be agreed and adopted. However, it is no one’s responsibility to take on this task. The only organisation that has a broad base of worldwide technology suppliers and which has a remit to develop any international standards (albeit only in the health technology arena at the moment) is the Continua Alliance. It is in the Alliance’s members’ long term interest to tackle this problem. What role will Telecare Aware play? During 2008 Telecare Aware will post links to news items that illustrate the problems. I am happy to open up these... Continue Reading

Telecare Soapbox: Access to emergency services: a right, entitlement or privilege?

...get it wrong with tragic consequences, we may feel outraged. Here are two stories as examples: Mother dies after 911 call is treated as prank and 911 caller’s last words: ‘I can’t breathe’. However, emergency call centres have always faced something of a dilemma when answering calls which may be hoax or which are reporting ‘trivial’ incidents. It’s a big problem. This BBC news item reported that just under a quarter of calls to police in London in 2003 justified an emergency response. (Read item and comments.) Part of the response to this in recent years by UK fire services... Continue Reading

Telecare Soapbox: What’s wrong with the UK’s model of telecare?

Telecare practitioner Rufus Handy articulates in a forthright manner what many people seem to be thinking about the way telecare is currently being presented and implemented. Rufus has been a telecare co-ordinator for an English local authority for the past year. The opinions expressed here are his own and are not to be taken as representing those of his employer. What’s wrong with the UK’s model of telecare? For the purpose of this ‘soapbox’ item, which I hope will spark some debate, let’s just make the assumption that when an occupational therapists sees a client in their home situation, she... Telecare Soapbox: Postscript to the UK budget announcement

What was Chancellor Gordon Brown up to when he announced that the VAT rate on equipment to help older and disabled people live independently would reduce to 5%? Steve Hards reflects. Despite calling his commentary ‘Budget 2007: VAT – No surprises’, accountancy writer Nigel Harris was surprised at the announcement that VAT on items of equipment for older and disabled people will be reduced from 17.5% to 5%. He says “This measure was unexpected and does not seem to have been particularly high on any lobby group’s agenda, from which one might infer that the take up will be fairly... Continue Reading

Telecare Soapbox: LTC demonstrator sites to kill off small telecare suppliers?

...known is how much funding there will be because, of course, DH isn’t announcing that. However, someone (not me!) who is supposed to be in the know has talked to Computing for its article which suggests that it will be about £30 million. The lure of having an average of £10 million in dedicated funding per site – two-and-a-half times Newham’s huge project – should flush out some very good bids. Why should this good news be a problem? The programme is, of course, good news. The lack of a large evidence-base for the effectiveness for telecare- and telehealth-supported interventions... Continue Reading

Three perspectives on being old

These three items all happened to come in on the same day. Not telecare-related directly, but relevant to the main client group. 1. One third of older people in UK planning to live in one room in the winter. A survey by Help the Aged and British Gas. 2. Joan Bakewell (known in the 1960s as ‘the thinking man’s crumpet’) now 75, just appointed by the UK Government to represent the interests of older people. Her manifesto – get more of the little things right to make life easier. The Independent’s take on the story. 3. Moving account by a... Continue Reading
