Top award for ‘the worst written nonsense’ of 2012

Not telecare or telehealth, but a sharp reminder how easy it is to slip into writing nonsense (and have it approved). And don’t forget these are the kind of people who will be advising commissioners, possibly on telehealth procurements, in the brave new NHS. Local NHS unit picks up top award for ‘the worst written nonsense’ of 2012 Wirral Globe.... Continue Reading

Telehealth Soapbox: Kiss of death for telehealth adoption in the UK?

...also fear that the pathfinders will seek out their own paths - some starting from a point of knowledge and others starting from a point of necessity. If I was a business I would be sh*tting bricks at the thought of providing 100, 400, 1000 of my units to organisations that might not have the foggiest. Changing the b2b and b2c relationships to p2p is not one I would relish being a part of. Also on the part of the PCTs/CCGs - unknown territory for some and taking the lead/working alongside a supplier is not something they are designed for.... Continue Reading

Some ‘awards’ for 2012 digital health

David Shaywitz More than fair summary of my Forbes.com piece. Re: VK, I would refer interested readers to this piece (http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidshaywitz/2012/09/01/why-i-disagree-with-vinod-khosla-about-digital-health-and-hope-he-succeeds-brilliantly/) and this piece (http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidshaywitz/2012/09/03/digital-health-needs-courageous-investors-and-other-lessons-from-the-khosla-controversy/ ) from over the summer. I agree that especially in his white paper he promotes his portfolio companies conspicuously, but on the other hand, he's seriously investing in a space many other investors refuse to touch. So, in the area/skin in the game/etc. Finally, re: dis mgmt - appreciate that challenges of dis mgmt may be well known to readers here, but it's hard, at least for me, not to be struck by the outsized... One Report to rule them all… (UK)

Alasdair Morrison A very interesting read Steve, I am very disappointed however that this focuses on Telehealth and Telecare as separate areas and does not even mention the use of video as part of a solution for integration and shared working. To report on the two in this isolated way means that the silos will just continue. Interesting to hear the suppliers' comments and their reluctance on interoperability :-) Steve Hards, Editor Alastair - I must admit that I hadn't noticed the lack of references to videoconferencing. As I was reading it and bearing in mind that I would be... Continue Reading

Brain injury research study: progress is ‘ordered, predictable’

...point he suffered from migraines) and a severe concussion at age 44 from where the downhill mental and physical decline, which was already present, accelerated. In addition he contracted malaria at age 30, which is only noted in the article but which we now know eventually affects the brain and CNS. The research study points out it is length of time in activites that have the potential of head injury--and frequent sub-clinical traumas, which Henry most certainly had--that counts. Students of the King's life could certainly match his medical history to the four stages of CTE outlined in this study.... Continue Reading

3millionlives: Newsletter and video (UK)

November was a busy month for the 3millionlives (3ML) team, as reported in their November newsletter (PDF). They have also released a video, below. (7½ minutes) The video contains interviews with doctors, patients and a nurse. It was made to be shown at the Making Sense of Commissioning conference held on 27 November 2012 at the Royal College of General Practitioners, London, which may explain the focus on telehealth and the absence of any references to the contribution telecare technologies can play in supporting people at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdauRG-BaRo 3ML is also showing up alongside the Digital First initiative as one... Are you a Supra Hero?

“Doris has had her telecare equipment, including her Supra KeySafe, successfully installed around her home. But now she is in danger! Our Heroes need you to direct them safely from their secret headquarters to Doris’s house. Along the way they must collect as many of Supra’s service packages as possible. Every week Supra UK is giving a C500 KeySafe to one player.” Play the Supra Heroes game here. (Editor Steve’s score? Don’t ask!) The point of this game may baffle non-UK readers…in short, it is an online game to introduce people to some of the resources that are around for... Continue Reading
