There are still legal issues to address around charging which gives rise to installation risk - surely this needs to be addressed before tender? and we know how long "legal" can deliberate over things Then there is this little gem regarding how to fund all this - (my underlining):
option b. Risk sharing with strategic partner – this will determined following procurement. Initial conversations with major providers indicate their willingness... Continue Reading

Telehealth on the e-commerce model

Should virtual patient-doctor visits (termed here telehealth rather than telemedicine) have taken a page from the US e-commerce model to stimulate adoption? That is, to make them popular, provide an economic advantage over in-person visits? (In the US, online sellers such as Amazon initially grew because purchases largely circumvented state sales taxes, costing less.) Dr. David E. Williams proposes that payers now emulate this economic advantage by charging consumers nothing or very reduced co-pays for online visits, and/or incentivize physicians to move in-person visits to online. Aside from the cross-state licensure and medical records access problems, most payers (other than... Continue Reading

Two UK items. What do readers think?

...- apart from their grammatical error in the title - http://www.hsj.co.uk/a-holistic-approach-to-patient-care/5053179.article?blocktitle=Most-popular&contentID=-1 - demonstrates preventative joined up care for those with Long Term Conditions, but in a model that could easily be offered to other patient groups. Truly an holistic approach including the use of telehealth. Steve Hards, Editor I'm sorry to hear that, but thanks, Cathy! Anon Just finished reading the two articles. One is not only an example of the same old telecare/health story - but is a pathetic attempt to over hype the UK experience and capabilities in the use of technology to support an ageing population. The... Continue Reading

Telehealth Soapbox: Securing IP–Source Code Rights and Escrow (US)

...software. The more you invest in the software, the more you should invest in the escrow. Software escrow is an essential insurance policy. Still, you must remember that unless you take Level III to the max, you’ll never be sure of what you have in escrow. When your developer goes bankrupt is not the time to find out that the CD-ROM in escrow is blank.   Mark Grossman, JD Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt www.ecomputerlaw.com 21 January 2013 Editor Donna thanks Tate Stickles, JD of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt’s Florida office for his assistance in securing this article series.... Telehealth Solutions and Wiltshire Medical Services: Moonray makes the marriage (UK)

...of health resources, a meaningful ongoing cost of the service was never calculated. Calculations from our experience show that Telehealth should cost £100 per patient per month for an end to end service including the clinical triage, and should enable savings of at least £150 per patient per month from reduced unplanned hospital admissions and GP visits. UNATTR Great sales pitch there Rebecca - and thanks for clearing up what Telehealth is about - there are so many terms thrown about nowadays that it is hard to keep up. The meaningful costs and savings you have included - are they... Continue Reading

Ireland’s alarm budget for older people halved

Ireland’s Seniors Alert Scheme, which provides grants for over 65s to buy personal monitored alarms, has been cut by 53%. Last year €2.4m was allocated to the scheme run by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. But under changes contained in December’s Budget and just announced, the funding has been cut to €1.1m. There has been widespread criticism of the decision, not least given the recent spate of robberies on the elderly around the country. Links to news stories on TANN Ireland.... Continue Reading

Simple Telehealth (Florence) offer to UK GPs

Here’s a link UK readers may want to email to their GPs, or their practice managers. It might do more good for the cause of telehealth than Department of Health endorsement or even 3ML publicity. In brief, NHS Stoke on Trent CCG has been running a clinical rollout of Simple Telehealth’s advice and interactive Florence SMS texting service and is now offering to fund a CCG’s licence for a year, including costs of at least 15,000 patient texts, and helping with implementing Florence across each participating CCG.
