Tech angel investor, philanthropist and astronaut-in-training Esther Dyson and her HICCup (Health Initiative Coordinating Council) team have picked the five model communities with populations less than 100,000 on what is now dubbed ‘The Way to Wellville’. They are: Muskegon, Michigan; Lake County, California; Spartanburg, South Carolina; Clatsop County, Oregon; and Niagara Falls, New York. Each of the towns will spend between $20 and $80 million over the five year period, advised by HICCup, to plot their own way to the greatest improvement in population health. Each community program has a different leadership structure: mayor-led (Niagara Falls), business & public health-led (Muskegon), foundation-led (Spartanburg), payer/insurer-led (Clatsop County), nonprofit-led (Lake County). Their business plans resemble a startup, in pitching health initiatives to fnders and negotiating with suppliers, and measuring results. Selected applicants who were not picked have the opportunity to participate in ‘Greater Wellville.’ Reuters. Press release with additional detail on each community’s structure and ‘Greater Wellville.’ Esther Dyson’s Grand Tour Chronicle. Previously in TTA 8 May.
