State of telehealth in Australia – a GP’s view

...later, the implementation of telehealth videoconferencing has been inconsistent and patchy, yet to be normalised as part of primary care practice” says McPhee. Living in cities like London or New York it can sometimes be hard to imagine what a step improvement in healthcare can be derived from an old-fashioned, or dare I say, some may say out-of-date, videoconference telehealth. McPhee says “The health status of rural and remote people lags behind that of metropolitan citizens; for example, in rural and remote areas, morbidity rates for cancer are higher and outcomes for mental health poorer. The dislocation from family and... Continue Reading

NYeC Digital Health: two diverging visions of a connected future (Part 1)

...standardized care at all levels with a high degree of patient–and physician–compliance. His four things we need for ‘digital medicine’ demonstrate what his vision entails: Mining data from EHRs, payer claims, patient monitoring data–predictive analytics. A wave of the future that is at present a concept truly in the distance, as merging together data streams that are so disparate when EHR workflows don’t cross-check each other (as in the unfortunate Dallas Ebola patient) only can be. Analytics companies have chunks of this, and this Editor saw presentations today from NYeC’s 2014 Digital Health Accelerator graduates Clinigence and iQuartic in this... Continue Reading

...feedback. (P35) Jumping on, there is a useful clarification: “Our objective is to establish England as one of the world’s leading centres for innovation in digital health and care services…followed by a paragraph perhaps worth quoting whole: Better data will not just enable patients, service users, citizens and professionals to benefit from genomic science but could transform life sciences and research fundamentally. It will drive new approaches to health and care that transcend traditional delivery boundaries, embrace new technologies and establish new partnerships across geographies and clinical and diagnostic specialisms. It will aid rapid implementation of the innovation pipeline from... Continue Reading

Telehealth kiosk HealthSpot gains trials with Rite Aid, Mayo Clinic

...and in May the previously mentioned Cleveland Clinic and behavioral health EHR/practice/clinical case management software provider Netsmart. While the HealthSpot kiosks are large and require a staff person for maintenance and cleaning, what is interesting is that they essentially fill a gap in the market by replicating a doctor’s or clinic office for typical minor complaints, whether at an office complex or upgrading a ‘minute clinic’ at a retail provider. They are also growing in a selective way with primarily high-profile partners. Private investors have given the company solid funding with an $18.3 million round this spring (CrunchBase). Rite Aid:... Continue Reading

Tunstall Healthcare asks lenders for covenant extension

...our July report on their FY 2013 results continue, as do the perils of leveraged debt. Charterhouse Capital Partners, their owner since 2008, just invested an additional £20m in the company in addition to their original purchase price of £514 million, with £242 million of it in debt. This can be viewed as they present–“to strengthen its financial position and support the implementation of the Group’s growth strategy”–or as a lifeline (a rather short one) to keep operations going until the new management in place on both sides of the Atlantic can improve results and especially recover the business that... Ebola and health tech: where it can help, where it failed (Updated)

...getting into the act. Researcher Erica Ollmann Saphire and her colleagues at Scripps Research Institute are researching how the ZMapp antibody “cocktail” combats Ebola, but the $28 million grant from the NIH is running low now they are in ‘war status’. The funds will go for better instruments including one to perform fast protein liquid chromatography, or FPLC. Go to Crowdrise to help them reach their $100,000 goal. Was the Dallas hospital’s failure to quickly diagnose Thomas Duncan on his first visit the clinicians’ fault or the EHR’s? This Dallas News article takes apart cumbersome EHRs, with too much, too... Smartphones, wearables are the future says NHS England

...Bruce explains: “To ensure continued progress, we have brought together a TECS Implementation Group consisting of experts and leaders from across these sectors whose remit is to support the strategic development and delivery of the proposals within the Improvement Plan. In addition, we have formed the TECS Executive Steering Group which meets regularly to provide clinical, technological and strategic leadership for the programme at a director level in NHS England.” This all sounds like a lot of bureaucracy and a drawn out attempt to rescue what remains of the 3ML programme. I started thinking of the Titanic and deck chairs.... Continue Reading
