International eGovernment and eHealth Cooperation Forum 2014 (Austria)

The Cooperation Forum is targeted at European and international public administrators, service providers, companies and potential purchasers in the areas of eHealth and eGovernment. It covers several verticals outside of healthcare but in the eHealth area they are (directly) listed as eHealth and Telemedicine, as well as less directly Open Government Data (OGD)/Public sector information (PSI). The Forum is centered on learning about latest trends and technologies, as well as cross-border contacts and meetings with principals in the eGovernment and eHealth sector. Supported by Enterprise Europe Network, the European Commission, WKO and Digital Austria. Attractively, participation in the Cooperation Forum is free of charge but registration for the event is mandatory; for international guests it includes complimentary accommodation (two nights in a 3*/4* hotel in the city center of Vienna with breakfast). RSM event on Clinical Neuroscience and Telemedicine on 24th September (UK)

Through presentations by world-class clinicians, this meeting on 24th September, will examine the wide range of ways in which telemedicine has improved patient outcomes, and reduced cost, in the field of clinical neuroscience. Older readers with long memories may recall a BT television advert from the late ’80’s featuring a neurosurgical consultant in his dressing gown and slippers studying a TV monitor in his home. A CT scan of an acute patient had been transferred in real time for a consultant decision using the ‘Intrans’ system. Since then, there have been many applications of image transfer, which has become the UK norm. This will be discussed, as well as the complexities and difficulties related to encryption.

However telemedicine has applications in a host of other clinical areas. Management of very acute neurological conditions remains the most obvious. ‘Apps’ in head injury management are now commonly used for both record and decision making and are about to be expanded further. We will also be discussing telemedicine intensive management with international experts by Skype. Acute stroke has also been transformed by thrombolytics, although the decision on who to treat must be made in local centres without recourse to neurological experts, so here again telemedicine plays a vital role.

Acute medicine is not the only field where telemedicine has a role. Long term management of disabled patients who find the distance to the specialist centre daunting is also vital. Telemedicine in neuro-rehabilitation is one of a number of areas where the techniques have found a clear place.

This is the fourth event organised by the RSM’s Telemedicine & eHealth Section this year – the previous three have all been extremely well attended; delegates have rated them highly in feedback reports. UK Telehealthcare MarketPlace 2014 (UK)

UK Telehealthcare is again having a free-to-attend London Market Place in Kensington Town [grow_thumb image=”https://telecareaware.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/UKTHC-logo-final1.jpg” thumb_width=”150″ /]Hall, on 2nd June 2014. In case you are wondering, UK Telehealthcare is the re-branded London Telecare. The change which took place in September last year is taking the London Telecare model nationwide.

These Market Place events provide the supplier members of UK Telehealthcare the opportunity to show their telehealth and telecare products and for visitors to try them out and discuss their requirements. Countdown to ATA 2014

It’s nine days and counting to the start of ATA 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland. For 25 companies, Sunday’s (18 May) highlight will be the Venture Summit held by the ATA and law firm Jones Day. The Summit will feature a morning of lessons from mentors and practice pitches from up-and-coming companies to gain tips and pointers. In the afternoon, selected companies will participate in meetings matching them with investors based on unique interests to provide one-on-one time to connect. Release (PDF). WLSA announces global adoption theme for Convergence Summit

The Wireless Life Science Alliance’s Ninth Annual Convergence Summit, 14-16 May at beautiful San Diego’s Omni Hotel, will be themed around greater global adoption of technology-enabled healthcare. This marks a change from the technology-heavy early days (your Editors have been covering since at least 2010) to worldwide institutional adoption (too slow), outcomes (public health still deteriorating) and consumer engagement (limited). The Wednesday sessions are for members only, the following two days are general sessions and exhibits. Featured speakers include Jeff Arnold, founder of WebMD and now CEO of Sharecare; Dr. Leroy Hood of the Institute for Systems Biology; Ralph Simon, CEO of Mobilium Global Limited which is active in Africa; from the UK, Dale Athey, PhD, CEO & Founder of OJ-Bio Ltd. Big data and mHealth combine to track & test ‘flu (UK event)

What looks to be a really fascinating event is being held on Thursday 26th  June 2014 in The Council Room, The Institute of Materials, 1 Carlton House  Terrace, London SW1Y 5DB entitled “New Frontiers in Digital  Technologies for Influenza:  Big data and Mobile-­‐Phone  Connected Diagnostic Tests“. Entry is £70 for delegates, less for students.

This event brings together leading experts in the field of big data and mobile diagnostics to discuss the latest technologies to track and test influenza. This includes recent developments in mobile connected tests such as microfluidic chips, advanced nano materials and optics and surface-acoustic wave devices and the use of online sources (e.g. Google search engine queries, Twitter) to identify disease outbreaks much earlier than current healthcare systems.

Pandemic influenza is rated as one of the top threats to global health on the UK Government National Risk Register. Early detection and vigilant monitoring of serious flu epidemics is crucial to controlling outbreaks and supporting effective follow-up care. Researchers across the globe have turned to innovative digital technologies to address this global challenge. A successful early warning system using big data and mobile-phone connected tests could predict a pandemic even before people attend clinics or in parts of the world that lack the resources for traditional public health surveillance.

Technology, Care and Ageing: Enhancing Independence

Sponsored by AKTIVE, a project that started at the University of Leeds’ Centre for Care, Labour and Equalities (CIRCLE) in 2011, next week’s conference it is focused on understanding the impact telecare technology has on the everyday lives of older people who are prone to falls or who suffer from cognitive impairments (including dementia) and the people who support them to live at home. AKTIVE 2014 brings together researchers, industry, voluntary sector and local authorities interested in the role of telecare and other technologies in supporting older people at home. When we are, it’s because the conference and the organization is significant to the progress of healthcare technology in remote monitoring and related areas. The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) is one of those special organizations in their long-standing advocacy of global telemedicine and telehealth. Health Technology Forum – evening of 26th March – free to attend (UK)

The next meeting of the Health Technology Forum will take place on 26th March. There no charge for attendance; Baker Botts has kindly confirmed their agreement to be long term sponsors.  This meeting will be in their premises close to Bank Tube so easily accessible.
